1) We will depart either from Windhoek or straight from the airport to the south and into the Kalahari Desert. We pass through commercial farmland with mainly sheep and goats.A lovely landscape with red dunes vegetated with acacias. We drive on back roads known only by the locals. After a picnic we shall arrive at the Bagatelle Kalahari Ranch, giving you time to relax after your long flight. We will take a nature drive and a sun downer on a red Kalahari Dune.
2) After a relaxed breakfast we will travel further south to the quiver tree forest close to Keetmanshoop. This forest amidst huge dolerite boulders makes for beautiful pictures. From here we will take the more scenic route through the Klein Karas Mountains to the Canyon Lodge or Village. Before sunset we will climb up a hill to enjoy the fantastic view over the wide open spaces and endless landscape.
3) We will visit the majestic Fish River Canyon, which is the second largest in the world. There will be time time to enjoy the majestic scenery and the peace and tranquillity, take a look at the flora and take pictures. Then we will continue to Lüderitzbucht. This is a quaint little town with lots of old architecture, dating back to “the diamond rush” of 1908. You will stay in the Nest Hotel, each room has a sea view and there is a wellness area to pamper you after the long travels.
4) The highlight is a visit to the ghost Town of Kolmanskop. The sand-dunes are slowly taking over the ruins of the fabled diamond mining center, once the richest town in the whole of Africa. You can see and imagine the splendour of the years gone by.Furthermore there is the Gourke house in town, a historic house restored to its old glory, a museum and many bays and beaches. Today the town mainly lives of the fishing industry, diamond diving and tourism. In our summer it’s possible to eat fresh crayfish (rock lobster) or other fresh seafood. Nest Hotel.
5) We drive back through the desert, close to the village of Aus we will look for the feral horses of the desert. They survive in this harsh environment since the 1st world war. Now we drive through a spectacular mountainous area with scattered Quiver trees. If time permits, we will take a detour to visit Duwisib castle, built in 1907 by a German Baron and his young American wife. Our destination is Wolwedans Dune Camp in the NamibRand conservancy. One of the biggest privately owned nature reserves in the world. This park borders the Namib Naukluft Park, so it is semi arid and only a certain number of beds are allowed in this area as not to disturb nature to much. Nature drives are conducted in open Land Rovers. It’s simply a stunning area with great views. The Lodge is luxuriously built from wood and canvas with amazing views into the mountains. You can open 3 sides of the unit and then it’s nearly like sleeping in the open. If you ever wanted to “camp in style”, now that’s IT! Dinner is very fine, a four course meal.
6) We will do a full day nature drive through the breathtaking scenery. Not many people have the privilege to visit Wolwedans, it is something very special. I will not explain too much right now, you will be pleasantly surprised.
7) We are not in a hurry and you can enjoy the dawn in your bed, it’s a very special thing to witness how it gets lighter and lighter with all the colour changes in nature. Sunrise is somehow different from dusk when we usually enjoy a sundowner. Then it’s a relaxed breakfast in the open Restaurant with a “view”. Then we drive to Sossusvlei Lodge. It’s quite busy compared to the last 2 nights, but it’s right on the doorstep to the world famous big dunes of Sossusvlei. In the late hours of the afternoon you can see all the lovely hues of red and orange which create a stark contrast to the dark shady side of the dunes. For dinner a luxurious buffet will be served under the stars.
8) In the morning we will visit Sesriem canyon and take a walk in the environs. Then we are off to the coast with Swakopmund our destination for the next 3 nights. I will accommodate you at either the Hansa or Eberwein Hotel. On the way down to the coast we will cross the Namib once more with its great and endless vistas. We will see the Kuiseb Canyon, the endemic Welwitschia mirabilis and the lunar landscape of the Swakop Canyon.
9) In the morning I will take you to Walvis Bay, our neighbour town with a harbour and here we will go on a “dolphin cruise”. We will definitely see seals and hopefully the small bottle nose dolphins whilst we enjoy fresh oysters from the area with a glass of sparkling wine. In the Walvis Bay lagoon we will see flamingos and pelicans. In the Afternoon we will do a guided “Quadbike “ Tour into the dunes, a nice adventure that gets the adrenalin flowing. Swakopmund has a big variety of Restaurants, you can choose from fresh seafood to prime Namibian beef or venison. The choice is yours; as meals are not included in towns.
10) In Swakopmund there are lots of things to do, you will not be bored. The morning is free for you. In the early afternoon you will take a flight with a little Cessna over the dunes to Sosssusvlei. From there to the Atlantic and along the coastline on to Swakopmund. It’s a highlight to every holiday. The light will be good for photography and it’s very interesting to see everything from above.
11) We leave Swakopmund, and its back through the Namib with its great vistas up to the horizon which is always tens of miles away, in the transit area from the desert there are many mountains, we will pass the Brandberg , Namibia’s highest mountain. This area has so many different geological formations. Our destination is Mowani Mountain Camp, a designer tented camp. Each and every tent has a great view and the sundowner place has the best. My words will not do justice to this Lodge, so you will just have to experience it. The evening usually ends by the fireplace with the stars so bright and plenty that they make us humans feel small and insignificant. The fire has something mesmerising in itself, we call it “campers television.”
12) After a breakfast at leisure we have to get going to visit the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein. I call it the “open air louver” of Namibia. There are the organ pipes and the burnt mountain to be viewed, later the Petrified Forest. Eventually we will reach the “Vingerklip”, our very own monument valley. We will sleep over at the Vingerklip Lodge, built on a hill with another stunning view into the Namibian Bushland Savannah.
13) Now we will head towards Etosha and we will go to the Ongava Wilderness Lodge. The luxuriously thatched bungalows are built on a dolomite ridge. Each unit enjoys a lovely sight into the African bush and underneath the Restaurant and bar area is a waterhole for the animals so that you can enjoy the African wildlife at its best. Shortly after sunset there is a good chance to see the endangered black Rhino. Occasionally dinner is interrupted if someone spots some special animal at the waterhole.
14) Now we will take a full day game drive; we will visit the different waterholes, which Etosha is world famous for. Water is very scarce in Namibia, this is the reason the animals do come down to the waterholes on a regular basis to quench their thirst. We travel east and in the afternoon we reach Mushara Lodge close to Namutoni. It’s a privately owned and well managed Lodge with lots of space.
15) So that we can go on another Game drive in Etosha, we will spend another night at this luxurious Lodge. For the people that are tired of driving and have seen enough, they can spend the day at leisure around the nice pool, it is big and inviting and the lodge is very personal and special amidst a forest of Terminalia trees. The food is exquisite and good wines are served. So it’s a great place to spend a day and catch up with your postcards and let the impressions sink in.
16) From here we will pass through the towns of Tsumeb, Otavi and Otjiwarongo and spend a last night on tour in the central highlands of Namibia. It will be on a guest farm or game Lodge.
17) To day it’s all the way back to Windhoek. You will have time to explore the town. Dinner is on your own account in one of the many restaurants in Windhoek, maybe in Leo’s, Hotel Heinitzburg’s very own and possibly Namibia’s finest Restaurant.
18) Your Guide will take you to the airport if you have an early departure. We will say goodbye until the next tour with Namib Enviro Tours CC.
